I'm going to be throwing a couple of theories here but since people have thought maybe the scenes at the facility are in the past and the story following Maru and Kiruko is the present, it has made me wonder if Maru happens to be the child of Kona and Tokio. It was shown they are having a physical relationship and Maru and Tokio look so similar the thought has come to mind whilst watching this episode.

A second theory I have is with the guy who claims to be Usami at the end, he shares the same voice actor as Shiro, the guy who was sent the naked picture of Mimihime. If the facility is set in the past then it is plausible for this "Usami" to be Shiro as he aged up. They also share the same hair color and eyes.

However, I don't know how well this story would fit in with the narrative that the kids in the facilities are potentially the man-eaters in the current time. However, if the man-eater that Maru and Kiruko encountered in this episode is part of "Usami"'s ability then I guess it matches.

Of course there have been many cases where voice actors get casted for two roles or more in an anime, but as there are still so many questions regarding the facility it feels like this could be a hint that if it is based in the past, some of them are alive in the present and we might get to meet them. That is if "Usami" is actually Shiro.

About the episode itself, it was so surprising to see Kiruko be caught up by those man-eater, for a moment I had no idea how the story was going to turn out but I started thinking maybe it was not really happening as she mentioned there could have been some sort of gas making them hallucinate. It was amusing to see Maru's solution to the hallucination is to kiss her though lol, and then he tried to go for a second round, this guy knows no bounds.

It was also surprising to see Kiruko walk naked infront of Maru, since it is still his sister's body, I wouldn't think he would allow it to be seen by another guy besides himself. Also, that sleeping scene was so funny, I thought Kiruko might have mentioned something hard was poking him again but I guess the sleeping bags padded the sensation.

I think we have the Kumoko situation here as well and the nursery scenes are from the past. Besides, the kids being called "Hiruko", like the monsters, is pretty much a giveaway that something caused the kids to turn into monsters.

The questions left are:

- How much time passed between the nursery and Kiruku/Maru story (15 years? 20? Probably not more)
- Did the nursery arc happened before the cataclysm (and whatever they were doing there somehow caused the apocalypse) or after.

Oh the kids have been called Hiruko in the facility? I've never noticed that, that sounds like a confirmation that they are the man-eaters then.

It doesn’t require to much of a theory it is self evident true, hard evidence is require to proof it but at least the current events proof past events, it could lead unexpected results of unwarranted proportions of unexplored territory. Bringing up technologies or knowledge to the current era could lead in to a conflict of interest chain of events groups will react then obtain them or suppress of what has been found. The main characters surely indeed seeking answers will only lead to more danger includes their surroundings. It reminds me this feeling Shinsekai yori, Re:zero, Ergo Proxy hummm this strangeness or desolate feeling out of sense of time Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?. Well what matter is past proofs present.

I'd really love for the people to set aside those "different time" theories. It has been going on for so much without zero confirmation or concrete hint, it just suggests the story is not addressing this sort of mystery.

Well, its one of the most credited theories out there tbh. it just makes sense. otherwise how would Maru be outside? it's not like they get released or something or at least it doesnt seem like it. Unless a Catastrophe happens, and that was 16 years in the past.

There are 1000 more ways why Maru is outside, with at least one of them being that... he never was inside. But sure, keep clinging to that maniac "different time periods" narrative.

then how did he get the powers? facility childrens arent normal kids. that much is heavily implied.

when we are introduced to the main duo Maru clearly states that he's looking for someone that looks just like him.

THE VERY FIRST FRAME WE ARE INTRODUCED TO THE FACILITY IS TOKIO'S FUDGING FACE THAT LOOKS 100% LIKE MARU

like what the actual hell man. i cant believe i have to explain a major plot point that is so self evident THE WHOLE PLOT revolves around it.

without this plot point the facility arc would make NO sense at all.
without this plot point there is no reason for Maru to be traveling!

i am even wagering that Kiruko's story is basically SECONDARY to the plot. He could may as well be a normal guy going about his business and the story WOULD STILL CARRY ON. dont get me wrong his story is crazy good too and it will most likely deeply rooted in the main story.
BUT ITS NOT THE MAIN STORY. IT'S NOT THE MAIN MYSTERY!

Tell me, if Maru isnt connected to the facility in any way shape or form. how do you justify the whole plot? do you think people just write words at random until something coherent comes about? do you write essays by splashing letter soup onto a paper sheet and call it a day?
